Do they even care about their car at all? Sounds like they ought not to be a car owner...

2005-2008 R52? The strut towers warping is a common issue with the 1st gen cars and is easily prevented with reinforcement plates you can get for $100-200 depending on which version you get (basically the Minis are stiffly sprung and the forces from the top of the shock apply this force over a too small area, leading to warping). Once the towers warp the rest of the components get extra load they weren’t designed for, wearing everything else out. Sounds like this car lead a hard life and was poorly cared for.

That maintenance bill is what, at least half the car’s value? More?

The bill of sale was 9,000 for the Mini; if you roll tax into that repair bill, it comes to 8,435

Are you trying to say that $51 is an excessive charge for a parking light bulb, that would cost ~$5-10/pair at Autozone, and 15min of work?

Nah, can’t be. That’s definitely a reasonable amount for that repair. :P

Depending on mileage the repairs might actually be more than the cost of the car, or damn close to it.

Its odd that it isn’t suffering from the more common issues, it just seems like no one ever gave a shit about the poor little car.

Also, how do you have a bank 2 O2 sensor fail on an I4?

For a 54k mile car, i cant imagine the abuse this thing took. What’s even crazier is that the first owner, who had it for 7 years, has a detailed and regular maintanece report on CarFax. The second owner had it for 3 years and this happened

The only issue this car has that you might see is the strut towers. Those are easy enough to spot too by simply lifting the hood and checking that the top of the towers aren’t bent upwards. Add a $150 set of reinforcement plates to a car without mushroomed towers and they will never be an issue. All the rest of the issues are because someone just beat the fuck out of the poor car without ever caring for it.

I should also note that the strut towers are only an issue on the first generation cars (R50,52,53).

R53. Mine did the bubbling strut tower, too. But I tracked it....

I have an R50 which luckily still has flat towers. I need to get plates at some point to prevent any future damage.

Kinja'd!!! random001 > TheTurbochargedSquirrel

Kinja'd!!!0

Well, if you’ve gone this long...

But yeah, I had to design a kit that reformed the towers, and then served as a reinforcement. That was a fun job. I used to design a lot of parts for the various companies out there in MINI land.

Damn! My wife just got an ‘06 S Cabriolet that was basically perfect on inspection except the hood could use a respray and the headlights are dim. 118k miles. We’ve put another 4K on this summer. Paid I think $5k which was significantly below NADA.

Edit: I just saw your screen name. S2K is the greatest.

The prices for mechanical stuff on this are fucking outrageous. $900 for oxygen sensors? $200 for alignment? $800 for an oil pan gasket and a crank sensor o-ring that 30 seconds of googling says should be a 45 minute job? $2,500 for a front end rebuild?!?!

$51 DOLLARS FOR A LIGHT BULB?!?!?!

God I hope this is not your regular mechanic.
